Gastritis or gastric ulcer is an inflammation of the stomach lining. It is caused by stomach acid or bile moving back up the esophagus. It can be chronic or acute. Acute gastritis can lead to an ulcer and also causes stomach pain. Choking on food or taking a large quantity of food may cause acute gastritis. This is when the stomach can no longer empty completely and stomach acid backs up to the throat. The back of the throat becomes irritated, which is called throat burning. It is usually mild but may be severe enough to cause the throat to swell and become sore. You can cause or worsen your stomach ulcers by having a too-large or too-small meal. Certain medicines can also cause or aggravate stomach ulcers.
