Cooking time can be confusing and is a big reason why some people don’t get very good at cooking. Cooking times can vary greatly depending on what you’re cooking, where you’re cooking, and what size you’re cooking.
Ingredients
Ingredients: You will need to buy pork chops, onions, garlic, a can of tomatoes, olive oil and white vinegar. Prep: Put the pork chops in a pan and season with salt and pepper. Add the chopped onions and garlic and cook for 5 minutes. Then add the tomatoes and olive oil and cook for 5 more minutes. Let the meat cook for 15 minutes before turning the oven to 400. Slice the pork chops into 3 pieces. Serve on a bed of onions, garlic and tomatoes and sprinkle with a little bit of white vinegar.
Cooking Methods
The best way to cook a pork chop is in a covered pan, over low heat.
Ovens
Ovens can get pretty hot. If you aren’t careful, you can burn yourself and even the food. When cooking meat, it is a good idea to start out with a thick cut of meat, so it has time to cook all the way through. A thick cut of meat is usually around one-and-a-half times larger than it’s length and width. The larger the cut, the less likely you are to overcook it. That way, it will cook evenly and you will get a tasty meal. A thick cut of meat also has more surface area, so it will absorb more heat and cook faster. Some foods that are best cooked on the stovetop, such as potatoes, pasta and rice, are also good candidates for the oven. Ovens are typically set at a very high temperature to ensure food cooks thoroughly. A low temperature can result in food drying out or becoming tough. For example, a high temperature of 350°F (175°C) can produce a flavorful roast chicken, but it can also dry out the skin and meat. Oven temperatures also need to be adjusted for different types of meat. Pork chops tend to dry out at high temperatures, so you can usually lower the temperature slightly. This gives the food more time to cook, while still getting a nice crisp outside.
Cooking time
Cooking time is different for every recipe, but we can usually estimate how long it will take. The USDA recommends cooking pork chops at 350°F for 20-30 minutes per pound. If you want a firmer chop, you’ll need to cook it for less time. A 5-6 pound pork chop should take about 1 hour and 25 minutes to cook. It’s best to use a meat thermometer to monitor the temperature of your pork chop. As the chop cooks, you’ll see the internal temperature go up. When the internal temperature of your chop is at 145°F, you’ll know it’s done.
Keep an eye on the oven
Careful when you’re cooking! A well-cooked pork chop requires careful attention. As with most meats, when you cook a pork chop the temperature of the meat and the juices needs to be kept constant. If you let the meat go past the “done” stage too early, you risk drying out the meat and curdling the juices. If you over-cook a pork chop, the meat will dry out and toughen. If you under-cook a pork chop, the meat will be mushy and lack flavor.
