The House of Clermont () was a noble family from the 13th to the 17th century in the Kingdom of Hungary. The early Clermonts were the descendants of Stephen II of Hungary.

Origin and history

The oldest known member of the family was Deudam Clermont. Although his epithet “Deudam” suggests that he was a Hungarian nobleman, it is not known from which part of the country he came.

Deudam Clermont appeared in the Kingdom of Hungary around 1211. In a document from 1241, a certain István is referred to as his son and the family is called Clermont. The name Clermont was previously used by a local Hungarian noble family from the Pannonian region. According to the genealogical tradition, they were descended from the ancient Clermonts, an ancient kingdom of Burgundy. They originated from the 6th century Clermonts, who were related to the Duke of Auvergne.
