Why Do My Burps Smell?

I’m a man of simple tastes—I like to drink strong coffee in the mornings, sit on the couch watching Netflix until I fall asleep, then wake up and repeat. I like to go about my day being lazy and take naps. But every once in a while, I find myself trying to solve a problem I don’t know how to solve. For example, sometimes I wake up and want to know what I ate the night before. So, I make some coffee, drink it, and then wait around for it to settle. When it does, I go to the bathroom and voila—I find an empty bag. But this rarely happens. It always smells strongly of grease and sometimes there is an oddly-smelling grease that I can’t place.

Causes of Burps

Burping is a result of digestive problems that happen when gas and/or a stomach acid spill into your esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Burping is caused when this tube gets blocked. The other types of stomach issues that result in burping include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux.

How To Prevent Burping?

Unfortunately, when you’re burping, you’re not just getting rid of a gas. Burping often smells like a food, especially if it’s spicy or fatty. As soon as you burp, your body goes into defense mode. When you burp, you trigger a reflex that causes your body to secrete mucus to try to clear the gas. But, this triggers the production of more gas. This results in more burps. The easiest way to prevent burping is to drink some water. Water can help wash the acidic byproducts from your digestive tract. Water can also help your body get rid of the gas. It can also help loosen your stomach and remove any tightness. Try to drink about two glasses of water every hour, starting at least a few hours before you eat.

Is Burping Dangerous?

A burp is the involuntary gasps or inhalation of air during the act of swallowing. Typically this happens because the food that you ate is either too big for your stomach to digest, or you didn’t eat enough to give your stomach enough time to do its job. You can avoid this by chewing your food properly and not drinking a lot of water during meals. When this happens the air that is swallowed is actually partially digested food. Because of this, it can have a foul smell. There have been rare cases of severe or even fatal gas attacks that have resulted in people suffering from vomiting, nausea, and chest tightness. The symptoms of a gas attack are very similar to those of a heart attack. However, if you are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
