Yawning is one of the most universal actions that we all perform throughout the day. Many people are probably familiar with the concept of yawning and how it feels to make a yawning sound, but what most people don’t realize is why they do it.
When Is It Normal To Yawn?
Normal Yawning is a reflexive act of the autonomic nervous system. This is a series of nerves that controls involuntary actions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, and urination. The first yawn happens when we’re in a state of drowsiness and inactivity. The primary purpose of the yawn is to open our airways to allow fresh oxygenated air into the lungs.
When Do You Need to Yawn?
In some people, the yawn reflex is an unconscious reflex that occurs when people are tired, and they can’t help but yawn. For others, it’s a conscious yawn. In these cases, people feel an urge to yawn and can control their yawning. When a person yawns, the back of their throat and mouth stretch outward. This causes people to open their mouth and take a deep breath. Although most people can’t control their yawns, some people are able to control their yawns when they want to. And there are also yawning disorders. Yawning disorders are conditions that cause people to uncontrollably yawn. These disorders are caused by either neurological damage or emotional distress. Yawning may also be a result of a migraine.

As you know yawning is quite common. However, it is usually seen as a habit, but it can also be a sign of a disease. Here are some of the more common causes of yawning.
Why Do We Yawn?
There are many reasons why we yawn. Sometimes, yawning is an involuntary reaction. For example, it may be a response to too much caffeine, or a lack of sleep. This often happens when we are lying down and are tired. Other times, we yawn voluntarily. It may be because we’re bored, nervous, excited, or in the middle of a conversation. A good rule of thumb is to assume you’re yawning when you feel like you’re about to. If you notice you’re constantly yawning, it may be a sign of a medical condition or disease.
How to Stop Yawning
If you’re tired and yawn frequently, you may have a condition called idiopathic somnolence. This is a general term for being sleepy. A yawn is one of the body’s natural responses to falling asleep. Yawning is controlled by the nervous system. A brain area called the hypoglossal nucleus lies in the brain stem and is responsible for regulating the yawn. Other brain regions influence the yawn, such as the inferior colliculus in the midbrain and the locus coeruleus in the midbrain and pons. If you feel drowsy and yawn frequently, you should see a doctor. Some doctors believe yawning may be a symptom of other medical conditions, including hypothyroidism, narcolepsy, or sleep apnea. A yawning disorder may also be the result of use of certain medications.
