The original pizza hut was founded in Wichita, Kansas in 1964, by two brothers, Tom and Richard Guas. The pizza hut was originally a pizza-by-the-slice style restaurant, where patrons could get a slice of pizza to take home and eat. They soon decided to try a larger, brick-style restaurant, where customers could sit down and enjoy a full pizza. The company still operates under the “pizza hut” name.
Pizza Hut & America

Then, in 1964, the restaurant was renamed “Pizza Hut.” By the end of 1965, Pizza Hut had expanded to 16 restaurants. In the 1970s, Pizza Hut began franchising. This helped it expand even faster.

Pizza Hut’s Pizza Recipe
The pizza was developed by a family of four brothers who were Jewish refugees from Italy in the mid 20th century. In 1955, they started making their own pizzas in a little storefront on Detroit’s east side, and brought home business from their neighbors. A neighbor told them about a nearby pizza parlor called Mangia. After a lunch of their favorite Jewish deli food, the brothers visited the shop and took pictures of the menu. They experimented with the recipes, many of which they found on that menu. While the brothers were focused on what they were doing, each one created a unique set of ingredients on their own. The brothers ordered their first $150 pizza. They eventually opened 4 more pizza shops, and a company was formed. In 1972, Pizza Hut opened its first location. Today, Pizza Hut is the second largest pizza chain in America, behind Domino’s.
Pizza Hut’s Unique Tastes
Originally, the company was called J.P. Taylor for its founder, Joe Prajsner. But after selling his business to his brother-in-law, he went by the name of John Pizzaguerra. However, the name that became most associated with the company was that of a pizza chef named Tony Gemignani. He was one of the most well-known chefs in New York City. As you can see, he really had some ambitious ideas. But none of them were much good. Then, in 1958, the company was renamed Pizza Hut.
Where was Pizza Hut founded?
Pizza Hut was founded in 1953 in Wichita, Kansas by four businessmen named Tom Monaghan, Frank Carney, George Donnelly, and Bill Gold. They wanted to start a business that would help feed hungry people and sell inexpensive pizza. They were successful with this idea and opened the first Pizza Hut location in Wichita in 1953. They decided to expand to new locations and began to make pizzas using their secret recipe. It is now the fourth largest pizzeria chain in the US, but they still make all of their pizzas using their secret recipe.
