The history of pizza hut is relatively simple. In 1954, college student D. Alan Dominick (later known as Domino’s Pizza founder) was working as a pizza delivery driver. While working, he created a pizza delivery system for his own pizzeria. In the 1950’s, Dominick’s pizza delivery system was successful enough to convince him to open a pizza restaurant that would include pizza delivery. In 1962, Dominick opened the first pizza hut restaurant in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. In 1973, Dominick opened his first “Pizza Huts of America” restaurant and pizza parlor in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 by two brothers, Ray and Jerry Kroc. Ray was an entrepreneur and the founder of McDonald’s. He went to Ray Kroc Jr., the younger brother, and asked him to sell some of his oil wells for him. This is how they came up with the idea for Kroc’s Pizza, which first opened in 1956. They made the first pizza in a mobile trailer that they had driven across the country to sell at the World’s Fair in New York City.

After selling Zito’s to a larger company in 1959, Tom Monaghan’s brother, Alfred, was feeling restless and wanted to create a restaurant with the goal of creating a different atmosphere. Alfred and Tom started Pizza Hut and purchased two restaurants in downtown Chicago and called them Domino’s Pizza and Little Caesars Pizza. The first Pizza Hut restaurant opened in Downers Grove, Illinois, on October 23rd, 1960. This is the same city in which Alfred and Tom originally started their restaurant.

Pizza Hut originated as a small business in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio. The founder was 21-year-old Dave Thomas, who wanted to provide his wife with a delicious pizza in a sanitary environment. He opened up a shop in a former gas station on the south side of town. His wife helped manage the pizza shop for a few months while Dave worked as a waiter at a local diner. Pizza Hut became a franchise in 1960. The first pizzeria was located in Columbus. Dave’s first franchise was in Middletown, Ohio. In 1963, he partnered with his college roommate, Jim Talbot, to expand Pizza Hut’s menu by selling sandwiches and other foods. In 1965, Thomas was offered a contract to franchise another restaurant, and he turned down the offer. This is how Pizza Hut got its name. In 1969, Dave Thomas opened the first Pizza Hut restaurant outside of the Columbus area in Texas. Thomas later launched Pizza Hut International in 1982, and the chain expanded to 131 countries by 1996. Pizza Hut filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2001, but it was purchased by Bain Capital in 2008.
