Buying a new oven is always exciting. However, ovens come in all sizes and shapes. That makes it difficult to figure out how long to cook your potato in the oven. In the video below, Tim and I go through the different methods you can use to figure out how to bake potatoes.
What Type of Potatoes to Cook
The ideal potato to cook is a red-skinned variety such as russet or Idaho. It is best to bake or steam them, and not fry them. Boiling, baking, or steaming potatoes are considered better options because they remove a large portion of the water, giving the potatoes a dry texture and a nutty taste. Make sure you keep a close eye on your potatoes as they boil or bake, as they can turn from soft to dry quickly. Also, watch out for the dark spots on your potatoes, which may indicate a water or lemon problem. If you do spot dark spots, discard them. The dark spots may indicate the presence of toxins. The most common toxins are copper, a naturally occurring compound found in soil. Some potatoes are naturally copper-free. If you find any dark spots, it is best to remove them. The dark spots are typically removed in the bag in which they are purchased, but if your potatoes aren’t packaged, you can cut off the spots yourself. Also, avoid using a knife, as that can bruise the potato. Instead, use tongs.
Different Temperatures for Different Types of Potatoes
The temperature of your oven can be an important factor for different types of potatoes. This is especially true for baking potatoes. The primary method of cooking potatoes is roasting. This involves the addition of a chemical reaction to the potato, which causes the flesh of the potato to form a crust. Baking potatoes are typically added to the oven at a higher temperature, in order to cook them completely. This means that the oven is the hottest temperature. For sweet potatoes, baking at a lower temperature is more effective. For example, baking sweet potatoes at 400°F is more effective than baking at 450°F.
