How Hot is the Right Temp for Baking Potatoes?
When baking potatoes, the temperature you choose depends on the size of the potato. Smaller potatoes will bake more quickly. Larger potatoes will take longer to cook and bake through, as they have a larger surface area. To tell if the potatoes are done, poke them with a knife. If they are tender but firm to the touch, they are done. You can also use a timer. Baking them at a higher temperature will result in the outside of the potatoes browning quickly. This is okay, but it will make the inside of the potatoes mushy and brown. To avoid this, lower the heat as the potatoes finish cooking. Additionally, some potatoes are naturally a bit starchy, and they will get a little gummy when baked. But this is no big deal. Simply add a few extra minutes of cooking time and keep an eye on them.
