Fatty Acids
We get vitamins from a number of sources, but the most important is a group of fatty acids called essential fatty acids. Fatty acids are part of cell membranes and your body needs them to perform a number of different functions. The three main fatty acids are omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. Omega-3 is a combination of fatty acids including alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentanoic acid. Omega-6 is made up of linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid. Omega-9 is a combination of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid. Fatty acids are typically found in food, but some people can become deficient in them. This is known as omega-3 fatty acid deficiency. If this happens, your body will be unable to manufacture certain proteins properly, causing potential problems. These deficiencies can lead to a variety of conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease. Some people are at a higher risk of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, including those with a poor diet, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, or being on certain medications. For these people, you may want to consider supplementing their diets with omega-3 fatty acids.
What is Vitamin A?
The human body needs vitamin A to help with a number of things. It’s one of the eight essential vitamins, meaning that your body can’t produce it on its own. Vitamin A plays a role in vision, the immune system, cell growth, and cell reproduction. It’s also involved with cellular growth and repair. Because of this, it’s helpful to maintain a good intake of vitamin A. You get this vitamin from carrots, dark green leafy vegetables, and animal products. However, your body doesn’t actually store vitamin A. Instead, it’s stored in the liver, and when you need it, your body converts other substances into vitamin A.
