Similarly, when buying beef, it’s important to think about the features that matter most, including the source of the meat, animal welfare and the number of animals slaughtered. The first two of these features are really important, while the third is very important, but may not be that relevant to you. The first two features are pretty easy to understand. The last one is a little more complicated. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that the average beef cow kills 1.6 times its own body weight in its lifetime. That sounds like a lot, but when you factor in the well-being of the cow, that number goes up to 2.3 times the cow’s body weight. And those numbers may sound like a lot, but they’re actually not that high. For example, 1.6 times a cow’s body weight is equivalent to about 13 birds’ body weight. And beef cows are killed for meat, so they’re not killed for being ill or in pain. If you’re only concerned with the number of times a cow is killed, then buying organic beef is probably the way to go.
Chicken
One of the healthiest types of meat is chicken. Chicken is lower in fat and cholesterol than other meats. It is also good source of protein, a mineral, vitamins, and antioxidants. Chicken contains less fat and cholesterol than beef, pork, and lamb. However, chicken does contain some fat. It has mostly the unsaturated fats, which may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Chicken also contains a higher amount of vitamin B12 than other types of meat.
