There’s no better way to understand the health effects of sleep deprivation than to just look at yourself. When you get enough sleep, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. When you don’t get enough sleep, cortisol levels rise. The trouble is that cortisol levels can go too high, which leads to problems such as mood swings, changes in appetite, increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline. A recent study found that sleep deprivation can increase the risk of heart attack. This is because the immune system is disrupted when you aren’t getting enough sleep. Another study found that people who sleep less than six hours a night for a week or more were more likely to gain weight than people who got seven or more hours of sleep. One final study found that the risk of stroke doubles when you sleep less than five hours a night for three weeks or more.
