What Are Fibers?

For example, there are three types of fibers in a banana: insoluble fiber, soluble fiber, and dietary fiber. Insoluble fibers have a chewy texture. They bind to bacteria in the digestive tract, preventing them from colonizing. Soluble fibers are more slippery than insoluble fibers, helping to remove toxins from the digestive system. Dietary fibers are the smallest in size. They cannot be digested by the body and pass through the digestive system. This increases the passage of food through the colon, and helps to soften stools. Some fiber supplements are more effective than others. It is best to consult with your doctor to see if the fibers you are taking are the right ones for you.
