Elizabeth (née Dixon, 20 October 1836 – 16 January 1897) was a British stage actress and a vamp of the early Victorian era. Born in London, England, Elizabeth was the eldest child of Thomas Dixon, an actor in the company of William Charles Macready and Ann Warren, a singer and dancer. She became a child actress at the age of 12, and made her stage debut in The Maid of the Mill in 1854. When she was 16, her mother Ann died of consumption, so her father sent Elizabeth to the United States to pursue a career in opera. She made her debut in the United States in a small part in Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore. Keen was signed on by the Philadelphia company of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pinafore on 17 October 1855 and after that left the company. She went on to sign with George Frederick Cooke’s California Company in 1856, where she became the company’s most popular leading lady. A romantic liaison with Cooke ended her association with that company and sent her back to England for a number of years. Elizabeth made her return to Broadway in 1872, and it was there that she met the young Victorian actor Robert Arthur, an actor she would marry after three years. Keen died in her sleep at the Grand Hotel in Broadway, Manhattan on 16 January 1897, from peritonitis caused by a severe attack of influenza.
