The ketogenic diet was originally created to be used in the treatment of epilepsy. In this diet, the body derives energy from fats instead of carbohydrates. When the body starts to break down fat for energy, ketone bodies are produced. These ketones are carried through the urine as ketones. Some people who have this are not aware that they are producing ketones in their urine. This is harmless, and you can go about your day without worrying about it.
Are Your Ketones Too Low?
Ketones are a form of energy. They are normally stored in the liver. When your body burns stored fat, the liver produces ketones as a byproduct. Ketones are normally measured in the urine. In the morning, when your body is burning fat, ketones in the urine are at their highest.
Does Everyone Get Ketones?
The best way to measure the level of ketones in your urine is by taking a ketone monitor. This is a small, handheld test that detects levels of ketones in your urine. It is important to know that everyone produces ketones in their bodies, so you will not necessarily feel the effects of ketones if you have normal ketone levels. However, if you are on a ketogenic diet or following other types of low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diets, then you will need to monitor ketones to ensure you are staying within ketosis. If you are eating a carbohydrate-heavy diet and still measuring ketones in your urine, you are most likely not in ketosis.
Ketones and the Morning “Blues”
Ketones are a natural byproduct of the metabolism of fats. The pancreas produces these ketones as a way of signaling to the liver that there are extra fats on board. That is, unless you are getting your carbs from the wrong places. When your liver has too many fats, it starts storing them in your body for later use. When that happens, your liver can produce ketones. Ketones are produced when your liver is running low on glucose or glycogen. This happens when you are low on blood sugar, or have a malfunctioning pancreas. So, if you wake up in the morning with a funny taste in your mouth, or feeling dizzy, check your blood sugar levels. If it is low, then check your pancreas. If you are low on blood sugar, and the glucose in your system isn’t being converted into energy, then it is highly likely that you will have a ketone level. A low blood sugar level causes the body to start using fats for energy instead of carbs. So, the body starts producing ketones as a way of signaling that it needs carbs. This is why ketones are often found in the urine of people who have just eaten.
Ketones and the Late “Blues”

This can lead to a number of conditions, including seizures and a coma.
How to Recognize Ketones
