Foliations are a type of surface that is made of one or more flat pieces called leaves, each of which has a surface called a leaf.

Types of Foliations

Many people are unaware of the different types of foliations, so they are often referred to as “parasitic” or “volutile”. This simply means that the different types of foliations depend on one another to exist. The common foliation found in the earth’s crust, called the “upper crustal foliation”, is a type of foliation found in most of the earth’s crust. This foliation consists of a single convex normal foliation that is bound by one or more shear planes. Shear planes are planes that make an angle with each other. There is usually a steep incline on each side of the shear planes, and the foliation is often only one and a half to two feet thick. These types of foliations are typically found near mountains, as a result of the crust being pulled apart due to mountain formation.

The leaves of foliated trees, on the other hand, are often of one piece, with no layers of tissue, such as is the case with palm leaves.
