The fruit of the spirit is defined in Galatians 5:22 as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These seven qualities are described as the greatest of gifts that God has given to us, but because we are broken and sinful, we often lack them. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the only solution to this problem, and it is through it that the fruit of the spirit can be produced.
Love
The term love is used in different ways in the Bible. In the book of John, love is often the definition for God. And in many religious traditions, love is considered to be the highest virtue. As one person put it, “To love is to be ready to suffer for what you love.” As a result, there are many great books on love, and you can find discussions of what love is and why we should love.
Joy
The bible has plenty of fun words and phrases. For example, the bible calls our lives a “lottery”. This means that whatever we have is not anything that we have earned. It is just a random set of circumstances. If we choose to see it that way, it opens up some room for a sense of gratitude. The bible talks about the “lottery” a number of times. For example, Paul wrote in Romans 8: “What then shall we say? Shall we go on sinning so that death may overtake us? No, not if we go on sinning. How shall we, then, live? By going on sinning? No, by doing what the law requires.”
Hope
Hope is the most popular fruit of the spirit. Hope is the characteristic that enables people to persevere in spite of suffering and to reach beyond what is considered normal or reasonable in life. It is the ultimate and most basic desire of all human beings and it is the fundamental source of motivation for the believer and of inspiration for the artist. It is the presence of this spirit in man that makes him different from animals and allows him to respond to situations in a way that leaves others unaffected. Hope is what makes us human and the source of our capacity for change and hope is ultimately the strength that sustains us in the presence of evil.
Peace
The word “peace” is used many times in the Bible to refer to God’s providence. The prophet Micah writes “The steadfast love of the Lord endures forever; his mercies never cease.” (Micah 7:18) God’s mercy is one of the fruits of the Spirit, along with love, joy, patience, and faith. This refers to the constant mercy of God towards his people. The Bible describes God as the “fountain of living water” (Isaiah 7:16), a description that refers to the constant supply of divine love and mercy that God provides. According to the Bible, God’s mercy is not a one-time affair, but a continual, lifelong supply.
Patience
Patience is the fruit of the spirit. This means that, to be patient, is to have a heart filled with this quality. There is also an old English word for patience, which is peregrin. Peregrin is the absence of pride. Peregrin is also the absence of envy, jealousy and gossip. There are numerous different Bible scriptures that refer to the fruits of the spirit, but some are listed below.
