Spalding doughnuts can trace their history back to Massachusetts in the early 1900s. The company’s beginnings were humble, and didn’t reach the level of success it has now until the 70s. In the 1970s, Spalding Doughnuts changed the way many people prepared their doughnuts. A company named The Crescent Bread Company was owned by the Spalding family. In 1973, they decided to expand their business and develop a unique machine that would work for mixing and shaping doughnuts. It was designed to be a stand-alone model, with the doughnut dough coming out from a doughnut pipe that was mounted on a spit. The stand-alone unit, called the “DI-KEN”, allowed the company to expand their doughnut business. The original version didn’t work very well, and by 1974 they had completely redesigned the DI-KEN to make it work better. In 1976, the machine was renamed the “Spalding Doughnut Maker” and they started a new business called Spalding Manufacturing. In 1978, they brought out the original DI-KEN machine, and that original machine is still being produced and sold today.
