I was in a hurry this past friday afternoon so I didn’t have time to make pulled pork. However, as it often does, things didn’t pan out the way I planned. Instead of going to work and coming home to spend quality time with my wife, we were stuck in the car for 2 hours. It was already 4:45pm when we got home and it was already dark. So, what is a porker to do? I was hungry so I decided to pull out my slow cooker and try my hand at making pulled pork.

How To Make My Pork Pulled

But, you probably don’t want to make pulled pork at home all the time. So, how do you know when to make pulled pork? When the internal temperature of the pork reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Pulled pork is a braise, which means the internal temperature of the meat will continue to rise for a short period of time after you remove it from the oven. So, you’ll want to let it sit for at least 20 minutes after you remove it from the oven. This will allow the temperature to drop a little bit. Then, pull the pork and let it sit for at least another 20 minutes. This will allow the temperature to cool enough for you to pull it without tearing the pork apart.

What Should I Use to Pull My Pork?

When I pull pork, I like to use my Martha Stewart Pulled Pork Rub to give my meat that great flavor. This recipe is so easy to make and you can make a lot of the rub ahead of time. To pull pork, you basically just put the meat in a large crock pot or slow cooker and cook it for 8-12 hours at 350° F. In the meantime, mix up the rub. The Martha Stewart Pulled Pork Rub consists of salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, ground black pepper and brown sugar. Make sure you use brown sugar, and not white sugar, since white sugar won’t dissolve completely. To add flavor, try adding some apple cider or apple juice to the pork. Additionally, you may want to add some cinnamon to the rub, since some pork experts say it will give the pork a sweet flavor. You should then cut the cooked pork into slices or remove it from the crockpot to cool for eating.
