How Pecan Nutrition
The pecan tree is the only large nut tree native to North America. The pecan nut is also the only major nut produced by a tree rather than a shrub or vine. It can grow from six feet tall to about ninety feet tall. It was originally domesticated in Texas and was native to the United States. As the pecan became more popular and cultivation of the pecan started to expand, a new nut variety was created. The new pecan was named the “Northern” and was created by crossing the seed from the previously domesticated “Southern” pecans. The “Northern” was selected by farmers for its wider and flatter shape. They also had a more rounded kernel than the “Southern” pecan. As a result of this, the new “Northern” is the more popular nut in the market today.
Benefits of Pecans
Pecans have been used as food for centuries. They’re high in healthy monounsaturated fats and have a low amount of calories. Pecans are also a good source of fiber, folate, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamin E. The nuts are usually eaten raw, but they can also be made into a powder, like almond flour. This is a good option for people who find that they don’t enjoy eating nuts because of their texture. Pecans are also loaded with vitamin K, which is important for our bone health.
