What Is a Celebration of Dog Day?

The day of honoring dogs and their role in society is celebrated on July 31. The day is created by the American Kennel Club and celebrates dogs and the people who love them. It has been observed annually since 1954 and originally started in response to a famine in Ethiopia. Since then, the holiday has evolved into a celebration of dogs and their owners, as well as other dogs in the community. In 2003, the day was recognized by congress and since then the holiday has been recognized by the United States Congress as a national holiday. Although the holiday is observed on July 31, some of the activities are celebrated on the previous day, June 29. As part of the celebration, people are encouraged to take pictures of their dogs, post them on social media, or take part in other activities.

The History of Dog Day

In 1939, during the Great Depression, a man named Max Scherr wrote a letter to Congress asking for national dog day. The idea was to create a day where we can all honor our best friend. It was the first national holiday in the United States. Unfortunately, Max Scherr’s proposal was killed by Congress. It wasn’t until 2016 when the idea for dog day was brought up again. This time, it was introduced as a resolution in the United States House of Representatives. The resolution was signed by President Obama and it now is celebrated on September 27th.
