McDonalds just turned 17 and still refuses to pay for children. This comes after a strike from thousands of working parents across the country. As reported by The Huffington Post, over a dozen US states already have laws prohibiting employers from discriminating against employees based on their age. However, most of these states do not protect child-care workers who are parents themselves. McDonald’s argued that their child-care services do not fit into the age discrimination category, claiming that they are similar to a nursing home. However, their argument doesn’t hold up. Nursing homes are required to pay for children under the age of 18, and McDonald’s should be too.

McDonalds is not paying 17 year olds. The court has sided with an unnamed employee of the fast food chain who was denied an hourly wage for working more than 60 hours a week. McDonalds claim that its so called employees are not employees but are instead independent contractors. The court however has ruled that their interpretation of the contract between the two parties is flawed. McDonalds argued that its franchisees do not need to pay its employees minimum wage, regardless of the number of hours worked. They also claim that the 17 year old employee was paid her full earnings and in fact even signed a contract at the beginning of her employment which stated that this was her agreement.

Company officials told Fox News that the teen was hired as a hostess, and that the company did not have a policy requiring its employees to be 18.

This change was made to help provide more “value” to consumers by offering products that are more “value-oriented.” So, this change has helped the company increase profits. While McDonalds is the second largest fast food company in the world, it still only has about 14,000 restaurants around the world. That means that this change alone is going to only impact about 3% of the people in the United States. And despite this change, the price of Big Macs remains stable at around $4.00.
