Why Do We Need Whole Grains?

Whole grains are whole grains, meaning that they have not been processed, refined, or altered in any way. They’re usually brown or whole-wheat, though there are other whole grains out there too. They typically consist of the three parts of the grain: the bran, germ, and endosperm. The bran and germ are found outside of the endosperm. The bran is coarse, which means it’s rich in fiber. The germ is small, which means it’s packed with vitamins and minerals. The endosperm is where most of the carbohydrate is located, and it’s also where most of the energy is. This is one of the reasons why wheat is one of the first grains that humans started eating.
