What is acid?
Acids are substances that dissolve metals and cause them to turn blue. Acids also react with water to produce gases, which we can detect with our sense of smell. Some of the most common acids are hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and phosphoric acid. Some other common substances that are acidic include vinegar, acetic acid, and citrus juice. But even common substances that we might not immediately think of as acids can still cause damage to our hair and skin. One example of this is baking soda, which is not technically considered an acid. But it is sometimes added to oven cleaners to increase the effectiveness of these cleaners. And unlike many other acids, baking soda will not cause hair or skin to change color.

An acid is a substance that causes a base to react. The combination of acids and bases produces salt. Base is any substance that neutralizes an acid. For example, if you have vinegar in a glass of water and add a pinch of baking soda to it, the acidity of the vinegar is neutralized.

It’s a number that describes the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. Anything above 7 is considered alkaline, and anything below 7 is considered acidic. The pH of household cleaners is important because it tells you whether or not it’s safe to use on your countertops.
