The History of Pizza

To understand why pizza has become such an iconic food, we need to look back in history. Pizza was first created in the late 1300’s by a Venetian blind maker named Giuseppe “Joseph” di Veneziano. He claimed to have been inspired by a recipe he saw at a local bakery that used cheese and baked bread. During his stay in the city, he brought the recipe to his hometown, where his wife had to explain that the recipe didn’t make sense, since it called for flat bread, rather than bread. This was the first time anyone tried to make pizza, and it took hundreds of years for someone else to do the same. As time went on, people started to experiment with pizza and create new toppings. In the 1300’s, Rome had large ovens that were used to bake bread, and they were later used to bake flat bread that could be used to create pizza. During the 1400’s, the city of Naples began baking pizza on a massive scale, and eventually, it spread all over Italy. Today, there are more than 150 different types of pizza all over the world, including Hawaiian pizza and Fatboy pizza. As mentioned earlier, pizza was invented in the late 1300’s in Italy, and it was named a national food of Italy in 2010.
