Motivated by recent studies of strongly coupled two-level systems, we study the effects of an externally applied electric field on the dynamics of a multilevel system. For the case of weakly coupled quantum wells, we derive an analytic approximation to the Stokes ratio which predicts a bifurcation to a nonlinear regime, where the ratio can become either larger or smaller than unity depending on the state of the system. For the case of a strongly coupled system, we numerically calculate the Stokes ratio by solving a system of coupled rate equations in the presence of a weak externally applied field. For this system we find a stable nonlinear regime where the Stokes ratio becomes large and positive, and the ratio is able to behave qualitatively different than that
