From breakfast to dinner, there’s a constant stream of sweets flowing from the home kitchen. The average American eats more than one-third of their daily calories in the form of sugar and sweeteners. That’s over 100 calories per person, per day, just from sweet treats. While it’s easy to say that we should cut down on sugar, it’s actually much harder to do so. And for good reason. Sugar is an important nutrient. The body needs it to survive and thrive. But too much of a good thing isn’t good at all. Sugar is a cause of weight gain, tooth decay, and heart disease. So if you’re struggling to get healthier, it’s important to cut down on sugar and replace it with healthy foods that will give you the nutrition you need.
Calorie Counting
The average American consumes around 87 teaspoons of sugar each day. This equates to about 420 calories. The amount of sugar you consume each day depends on a number of factors. Some of the more common foods that contain sugar include candy, sodas, fruit drinks, fruit juices, flavored milk, yogurt, ice cream, baked goods, doughnuts, fast food, potato chips, sweet breads, cookies, cakes, and candy. The problem with consuming too much sugar is that it is often hidden in the foods that are listed above. Often times, people don’t realize that a single-serving package of cookies or cake contains hundreds of calories, and they often consume too much sugar because they don’t recognize these high sugar foods.
How Many Calories in One Cup of Sugar?
One cup of sugar contains around 120 calories. This makes it a source of energy for your body. But it’s important to know that this cup of sugar is not the same as one sugar packet. Sugar packets have an average of 140 calories and are made up of white sugar. One cup of white sugar contains 16 grams of sugar, or about 16 teaspoons of sugar. One teaspoon of sugar has 5 calories. One teaspoon of sugar is enough to fill up one percent of your stomach. If you are on a calorie restricted diet or trying to lose weight, you can drink this cup of sugar or replace it with another sweet source, such as one can of sweetened condensed milk.
How Many Calories Should I Consume?
It is recommended that most adults consume between 2000 and 2500 calories per day. The average adult should consume between 120 and 140 calories per hour. But this may vary depending on gender, body size, and other factors. If you are overweight, your daily calorie intake may need to be higher than this. The main goal of your calorie intake is to maintain your weight. Studies show that people who consume more calories tend to have a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes. But keep in mind that calories are also a source of nutrition. Most foods have a calorie content, but not all calories are equal. Some are more nutritious than others, which is why most people recommend not going over your daily calorie intake.
