Pizza is delicious. No argument there. However, many pizzerias give their pizza a kick by adding a ton of salt to it. While salt is healthy in moderation, it’s no good for you when you eat pizza. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Salt is found in almost every other dish served in restaurants. Salt also often ends up in processed foods, even those that are supposed to be healthy.
What is sodium?
Sodium is a mineral that is found in many foods. It is also an essential nutrient, and we need to consume it. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for sodium is 1,500 milligrams. That is about the amount of sodium found in a medium size pizza. However, sodium isn’t the only problem with sodium. There is also potassium, which we need to consume as well.
Your daily sodium intake
Your daily sodium intake is based on the calories you eat each day. The suggested daily limit for sodium intake is 2,300 mg, which is about 1 teaspoon of table salt. A large slice of pizza usually has about 400 calories, so if you eat pizza for one of your main meals, you can exceed this sodium limit for the day if you eat the entire pizza. Most food labels will also list how much sodium a food contains. Foods that are high in sodium are typically processed and prepackaged food. You can read the food labels to learn how much sodium a food contains, which can help you plan your meals and avoid foods that are high in sodium. There is no need to worry about consuming too much sodium. Too much sodium can lead to health problems, but there is no recommended daily limit for sodium.
Pizza and sodium
Pizza is high in sodium and may be very unhealthy. A slice of pizza contains around 840 milligrams of sodium. That’s more than the daily recommended intake. The average diet has about 2,400 milligrams of sodium, and the World Health Organization recommends adults limit their sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams a day. So, you shouldn’t have too many slices of pizza!
How much sodium in pizza?
Pizza has over 400 mg of sodium per slice. Americans are also getting fatter, and therefore eating more pizza. One slice of pizza contains about 700 mg of sodium. There are different types of pizza, but most are high in sodium. In general, pizza should only be eaten once in a while. To help limit your sodium intake, you can choose pizza that is low in sodium.
Saturated Fat
There are several studies that have found a correlation between eating pizza and a higher risk of death. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that found that people who ate a large number of slices of pizza over the course of a year had a higher risk of death from cancer than those who didn’t eat pizza. Pizza is filled with saturated fat, so many of the people who eat pizza are consuming a large amount of saturated fat. This can lead to weight gain, inflammation and a higher risk of heart disease.
