With the old methods, the workers had to be in the field for many hours every day. In recent years, the tomato harvests have been mechanized. However, there is still some work to be done by the people.
How Many Tomatoes Are Used in la tomatina?
The la tomatina is the largest tomato fight in the world. It occurs every year in the city of Barcelona on the last Sunday in September. The world record for the largest tomato fight was set in 1996 when 6.5 million tomatoes were used in the fight. A more recent record was set in 2013 when the number of tomatoes reached 7 million. The average weight of the tomatoes was 500 grams (about 1.1 pounds) and the largest tomato was measured at 2.5 meters (almost 8 feet) in diameter.
How To Get Involved
During la tomatina in 2011 the organizers had to distribute 60,000 to 100,000 tomatoes. The event is for food enthusiasts, and they like to party. In total there were 46 stages across Barcelona. Volunteers can enjoy a free meal of 3 tapas in exchange for a little more volunteering. Afterwards, they can also try their hand at salsa, or at the salsa fiesta.
