What is an Ounce?
The standard measure of alcohol (also called volume) is known as the “ounce”. A standard 12 ounce bottle of beer or hard liquor typically contains 33.8 ounces of liquid. This means that a standard shot of hard liquor is about 1.5 ounces or about 4 tablespoons of liquid. You can drink this much alcohol with only one or two alcoholic drinks. The U.S. government recommends drinking no more than 3-4 alcoholic drinks per day, and no more than 2 drinks on the weekends.
How Much is a Shot of Liquor?
A shot is 1/2 ounce or 12.5ml of an alcoholic beverage, which is a common measurement. In the case of liquor, it will likely be a regular-sized shot glass. When it comes to wine, it’s common to measure a shot with a wine glass. This means that it’s likely to be 1.75ml or 0.01 liter. In the case of beer, it’s common to measure it in a pint. A widely celebrated early form of this type of alcohol was produced in the Middle Ages and was called schnapps. This has led to the expression “two and two make four.” Meaning that whiskey adds two units of alcohol to your body. You can have 4 ounces of pure alcohol, or 2 to 4 ounces of a blended drink like a whiskey sour. When buying a bottle of whiskey, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on how many shots are in the bottle. Keep in mind that alcohol is measured in standard drinks, or units.
