The FDA recommends cooking salmon until it flakes easily, and for salmon, this should take just a few minutes. If you buy fresh salmon, you can expect it to be best within a day or so. If your salmon is frozen, it is more likely to last up to a week, but should be used within 5-7 days. Frozen salmon tends to be thawed and not cooked, and so should be used within the week. If you buy canned salmon, expect to have it for about 4-6 months, depending on the kind of canned salmon you get. According to the National Institute of Health, you can store canned salmon in the refrigerator for about a week. Once salmon is cooked, it can be frozen, stored in the freezer, or can be kept in the refrigerator. You can also freeze cooked fish in ice cube trays. To freeze salmon in ice cube trays, you’ll want to remove as much oil as possible, and you’ll want to rinse the salmon and pat it dry before putting it in the trays.
