When the ritual is complete, the buffalo is immediately re-skinned and then stuffed back into the skin. The buffalo are usually fattened up to three months in advance, so they can be smoked quickly. The smoking process is usually started the morning of the ritual. The fat in the back and the meat in the belly is called blubber. The top of the belly is called the brisket, while the bottom of the belly is called the pot belly. The Boston Butt is cut into two and one is smoked, while the other is used for ceremonial purposes. Traditionally, a Boston Butt was prepared in a one-to-one ratio of meat and blubber, although you can use the meat as a steak. Sometimes the Indians would also burn the blubber to grease the meat. They’re usually called boston butts. But really, a boston butt is just a butt that’s been smoked. To smoke a butt, you need to use a machine called a smoking machine. Some people prefer to use bongs because the smoke is still hot. Bongs will give you more of a hit, but also more of a headache. Bongs are more compact than a smoking machine. The machine will heat up the tobacco to a certain temperature. This way, when you smoke it, it won’t burn your throat or leave bad flavors in your mouth. If you do use a bong, it’s important to clean it. The best way to do this is with plain, old water. There are also special cleaning and drying solutions that can be used. The amount of time you smoke the tobacco depends on the machine you’re using. The machine will take a portion of the tobacco, usually 10% to 20%. If you use a smoking machine, the machine will heat it to a temperature between 300 and 375 degrees. You can keep adding tobacco to the smoking machine until it’s done, but a smoker might put a half-smoke down before it’s done. Once the smoking machine is finished smoking the butt, you can either use a grinder to grind it up, or place it in a small container and pour boiling water over it to separate the tobacco.
