How To Test Honeydew Melons For Ripeness

To know when your honeydew is ripe, look for the follicles or seedpods. The tip of the follicle will start to bulge and the fruit will start to get soft. At this point, it’s safe to harvest your melons.
How To Identify a Ripe Honeydew Melon
There are many ways that honeydew melons can be identified. These include an indentation in the neck, or smooth or corky skin. Once you have identified a honeydew, it is time to check its ripeness. To do this, simply touch the melon with your hand. If it is firm and heavy, it is ripe. However, if it feels slightly soft or squishy, it is not ready. To test it further, break it open. If it is ripe, the seeds should start to fall out. If it is not ripe, it will be hard, or you will need to get it very ripe for it to be ready to eat.
How Do I Buy a Ripe Honeydew
The honeydew melon is known for its crisp, sweet flavor. These melons are commonly available from July through October, with the peak season being late August through October. Before buying, check out the honeydew melons by inspecting them. Look for a healthy-looking, heavy melon that is heavy for its size. Honeydews usually weigh between 10 to 15 pounds. Also, check the bottom and sides of the melon. If the sides are bulging and the bottom appears to be full, the melon is ripe. The melons should also have a thick rind. A melon that is too thin, such as one that is pointed, will not likely be as ripe. To tell the difference between a ripe and a non-ripe honeydew, cut the melon in half and inspect the rind. The rind should be mostly smooth, without any cracks or bulges.
What Is the Difference Between a Honeydew And a June?
The two are not always easy to tell apart. A honeydew has a straight unripe fruit on top, unlike the fruit of a June, which grows in an arch. Also, a honeydew is a little darker than a June. A June has a brighter orange color and a little more red. A honeydew is usually just a little paler and more orange.
