On the 13th of September 2006, Dame Agatha Christie was on her first speaking tour in the United Kingdom, an elderly woman who had been both a famous author and a famous detective. She had previously been in the headlines when she appeared before a Parliamentary committee on child abuse during the 1970s. She had also been a great supporter of a police review of unsolved cases. But, on this tour, she became very unwell. She suffered a suspected heart attack and fell into a coma. Her heart stopped beating and she was pronounced dead on the 15th of September 2006. She was 88 years old.

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay on October 4, 1890. She was the first child of a lower middle class family. She grew up in a beautiful home that her family had built for themselves. Her father, who had been a government official, was now employed as a manager of a boarding house for the local industrialist Sir Henry Robertson. Her mother was a quiet woman who was often ill. When her father died, she was left to care for her older sister Mary and her younger brother Max. Christie grew up in a loving family but she was always very independent. At age 14 she left her family to live with her older sister Mary in England. There she attended Mrs. Poyntz’s school for young ladies. She excelled at her studies and was sent to study at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. She studied English literature and graduated in 1911. She then went back to Torquay to help her mother take care of her family. In 1914 she married her first cousin, archaeologist Max Mallowan. They had two children but the marriage was a troubled one. Her husband left her for another woman, after which she turned to writing as a way to support herself and her children. She wrote seven detective novels and 20 plays. She was awarded an O.B.E. in 1938 and an honorary degree in 1951. She was taken to a London hospital in 1964 and died of a stroke the next day.
