What are the most common heartworm test results?
The most common blood test that is used to screen for heartworm infection is the antigen test. It is normally used on dogs less than a year old, and is typically performed about every six to eight weeks. Dogs that test positive for heartworm antigen are treated with a single dose of injectable ivermectin (brand name: Heartgard). The purpose of the ivermectin treatment is to reduce the amount of the heartworm parasite in the blood, which makes it easier to detect. Once the dog is treated, a heartworm test is repeated to check the effectiveness of the treatment. Unfortunately, it is possible to get false negative test results. This means that the dog is treated, and the treatment seems to have been successful. However, the dog still has heartworm. This can happen if the dog is not fully tested before or after treatment. The most common sign of heartworm infection is coughing. Coughing is a common symptom of heartworm infection in dogs. It can also be caused by other diseases, such as heartworm-like disease in cats, FIP in cats, feline leukemia, and parvovirus. Other signs of heartworm infection include enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss, fever, and respiratory difficulty.
Heartworm Prevention In Dogs
There are different ways of protecting dogs from heartworm disease, including preventative medications and heat treatment. Heartworm disease is a parasitic disease that is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes that carry the worm. There are several ways to protect your dog from heartworm disease. The first is by using preventative medications. These medications are typically for dogs and only treat the dog for heartworm for a limited amount of time. Another way of protecting your dog from heartworm disease is to make sure your dog is vaccinated against the parasite. This will protect the dog from infection, and will even protect other animals that come into contact with the dog. Lastly, you can check on your dog regularly to make sure there are no signs of the disease. If your dog has any symptoms of the disease, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
Symptoms of Heartworm in Dogs
Heartworms are parasites that commonly affect dogs, and are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most dogs can naturally fight off the parasites, but if left untreated, they can become a significant health risk. The most common symptom of heartworm in dogs is fatigue and lethargy. If a dog is showing these symptoms, it is critical that you schedule a veterinary exam, including a blood test to check for heartworm. A blood test can also determine if your dog is at risk for other conditions that may be present, such as diabetes or liver disease. This is important because untreated conditions like diabetes or kidney failure can make heartworms worse. Heartworm can also be detected through a fecal test, which can help you identify heartworm carriers and determine the type of heartworm present. Once you have a diagnosis, it is recommended that you start a heartworm preventative treatment.
