Foods to avoid when pregnant include: caffeine (found in coffee and sodas), alcohol, nicotine, and sugar. When it comes to caffeine, it is a little difficult to know if a coffee or soda counts as one serving. Not surprisingly, alcohol is also not good for pregnant women, as it can cause birth defects. As for nicotine, this is a toxin that is also a big no. The harmful effects of nicotine are known to lead to respiratory problems and sudden death. In terms of sugar, it is a big no. This is because it can cause hypertension, high blood sugar, and mood swings. Other foods to avoid when pregnant include: salt, white flour and anything that can cause inflammation. While having a few of these foods may not be a problem for you, having too many of them can cause problems.
