What are the Benefits of Fiber?

Causes of Acid Reflux

It is estimated that about 10% of the population suffer from acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. The major cause of this disease is a weak lower esophageal sphincter. The lower esophageal sphincter is the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus. The sphincter is located at the junction between the stomach and the esophagus. It functions to stop food and liquid from entering the esophagus. If the sphincter becomes weak, or it does not properly open, it is unable to keep the stomach and the esophagus separate. This allows stomach acid to flow backwards into the esophagus, causing an uncomfortable burning or heartburn sensation. This condition is usually a result of poor diet, changes in body weight, medications, excess stomach acid from bacterial or viral infection, or other disease. In some cases, esophageal reflux disease can be caused by injury or damage to the esophagus, or by hiatal hernia, a condition that occurs when a small portion of the stomach migrates through the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. Additionally, there are many diseases that can result in weakened esophageal sphincter such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and Crohn’s disease. In some cases, people are born with a weak esophageal sphincter.
