Can Hobby Lobby Discriminate Against the LGBT Community?
Hobby Lobby is an arts and crafts chain store that sells affordable arts and craft supplies to the public. These stores are based in the United States and are mainly owned and run by conservative evangelical Christians. They have repeatedly argued that employees have the freedom to express their religious beliefs in their work, which is protected by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. In 2014, a case was brought to the Supreme Court that asked whether the law protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. The court ruled that the case could proceed, and in June of 2015, the Supreme Court agreed with Hobby Lobby that it was protected by the RFRA. So, in a sense, Hobby Lobby is still able to discriminate against its LGBT employees.
When Is Discrimination A Crime?
Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of one or more persons or groups. Discrimination can be based on a person’s race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, national or ethnic origin, marital status, or socioeconomic status. It is illegal to discriminate against someone because of their protected characteristics. And the law protects individuals from discrimination in the workplace, in housing, in public accommodation, and in education. So, whether it’s an employer refusing to hire an applicant, a store or business refusing to sell something, or a university denying admission to a potential student, it can be considered unlawful. In most places, it is illegal to discriminate. And when discrimination occurs, there are different ways to hold those responsible for it to account.
Hobby Lobby’s CEO Talks Discrimination
In a blog post, Hobby Lobby’s CEO, Steve Green, said the company holds “the biblical view that life begins at conception and that has informed all of our employee policies and practices for nearly 40 years. In September 2013, Hobby Lobby began offering health insurance that covers the full cost of contraception for its female employees at the same level as our other insurance coverage.” The company also said that their insurance was expensive and limited to certain types of contraception. We find it ironic that Christians who shop at Hobby Lobby do not get the same discounts the CEO of the company gets. Hobby Lobby’s CEO also has a problem with the law. Before the Supreme Court’s decision, men could not get any form of birth control including the pill. Today women can get the pill at a variety of places including grocery stores.

The company offers its customers the ability to purchase Christian-oriented products and materials. This includes items that represent the Christian faith such as Bibles and Christian toys for children. The company is majority owned by the Green family. They are devout Christians and are well known for their Christian views. So when they apply their business philosophy to their personal views, things can get a little tricky. Last year, they came under fire for refusing to provide healthcare coverage for transgender employees. The company argued that providing such coverage would put them in violation of their religious beliefs. Hobby Lobby won a case in court and the decision was upheld by the Supreme Court. The high court ruled that a business owner may refuse to provide health coverage to transgender employees if it violates their religious beliefs. The court ruling said that the company had the right to refuse to provide insurance coverage for such individuals. But in a recent filing, the company states that they will begin providing health coverage for the LGBT community. Hobby Lobby representatives state that the company will now begin offering a “discount program” to the LGBT community. The company already offers a lower discount to the military and now the LGBT community will be eligible for the same lower discount.
