The nominees included such blockbusters as The Artist, The Descendants, and The Help. Most of the nominees were released within the past five years, and most of the films were nominated for Best Picture.
The Academy Awards are held each year to recognize the best films of the year. The winner is selected from the nominees in each category, with the exception of Best Picture. The term “Oscar” comes from the Operetta Award ceremony in honor of the birthday of King Oscar II of Sweden.
The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929 and recognized the best films of the year. For the first four awards, the ceremony was held in June, but was moved to January of the following year. The ceremony started a tradition where the nominees, winners, and presenters were all winners of their Academy Awards or invited by the Academy. This tradition has continued up until the present.
The Oscars show airs on February 24, 2012. With 127 films nominated, there were many potential nominees for the award. Each of the 10 awards have a different set of nominees.
