Pecan Fun Facts

What does a typical pecan tree look like? It can grow into a very large tree. Pecan trees can grow up to 400 feet tall and 30 feet wide, but more common trees are approximately 100 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. The pecan tree needs the largest oak tree in the United States to reach maturity. This is because the pecan tree has a very large hard shell around the nut, which makes it very difficult for another tree to mature around the pecan. The pecan tree can grow up to 15 years old before it begins to produce nuts.

Can I Use Pecan Shells?

You can use pecan shells instead of regular pecan halves for this recipe. However, you’ll need to reduce the sugar by 2 tablespoons because pecan halves are usually already sweetened. You can also use cashews instead of pecans, but remember that cashews are more dense and add a different texture to the dish.
