How to Make Homemade Jelly
I had some red bell peppers in my refrigerator and a bunch of onions that needed to be used up. I decided to make a batch of jelly to use for a recipe I was going to make. Since I’m not a canning expert, I was curious how to best preserve my home made jams and jellies. I ended up canning them for later use. I cut the peppers and onions in half lengthwise and then cut the halves in half again, making sure to remove as much of the seeds as possible. Next, I arranged the peppers and onions in a bowl and added some of the warm water in the bottom of the bowl. The bowl should be covered, but not full of water. You want to just cover the peppers and onions with a little bit of water. Place the bowl in the refrigerator and wait one hour before beginning. After one hour, remove the peppers and onions from the water and place them in a blender. Be sure to add the lemon juice. Blend the peppers and onions with the lemon juice and some water. Turn the blender on and continue to blend the mixture until it is a smooth liquid. I poured the contents into a sterile canning jar and placed the lid on the jar. Be sure to place the lid on tightly so that air can’t get inside the jar. Put the jar in a warm place in the kitchen and wait 10 days.
