Are cucumbers a fruit?
Sometimes people think that fruits are a group of edible plants that are not technically plants. But cucumbers are actually a type of fruit, and fruits are defined as any part of a plant that contains seeds. Fruits are most commonly thought of as the big, juicy fruits that grow on trees, such as apples, mangoes and grapes. But many fruits are actually berries that grow on plants. Berries are typically smaller than fruits and contain seeds. They include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
What is a vegetable?
When it comes to vegetables, there’s a large difference between what people think of as a fruit and a vegetable. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a fruit as a fleshy, one-seeded fruit that typically contains more than 85% water. A vegetable is defined as a plant part or product that can be consumed, rather than used for other purposes, such as the production of fiber, oil, or fuel. Cucumbers are considered vegetables because they can be eaten. However, many people consider them to be fruits because they are related to the fruit family.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations defines a fruit as, “An ovary with a fleshy, juicy pulp that is generally eaten together with the seeds.” Because fruits are usually eaten together with the seeds, you probably assumed that they’re not technically fruits. But because cucumbers are actually fruits, they are in fact fruits. And just like most fruits, cucumbers are generally eaten together with the seeds.
What are the differences between a cucumber and a melon?
Cucumbers are technically a fruit, while melons are technically a vegetable. But there are some differences between the two. Cucumbers grow in small segments. Each segment is called a “rind” and is typically divided into two layers. The outer layer is called the “peel” and is the part of the cucumber that is used when eating the cucumber. The middle layer is called the “core” and is the part of the cucumber that is typically discarded. When purchasing a cucumber, you can typically choose to buy only the peel or only the core. Melons grow in large pieces. Each piece of a melon is called a “segment”. Each segment has a single edible part. The edible part is typically called a “segment” or “melon”, though in some cases the edible part may also be referred to as a “cob” or “cup”.

If you live in the Midwest, chances are you have lots of cucumbers. Cucumbers are a fruit, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at them. They look a lot like a typical vegetable. That’s why it’s important to know how to wash and peel them.
