Cosby played an absent father and husband named Cliff Huxtable, who was a comedian. Each episode typically featured Cliff discussing life with his family, while also making jokes and interacting with his family. In the season six episode “Who’s The Daddy?”, Cliff accidentally impregnated his long-term girlfriend, Vanessa, with their babysitter’s baby. At first, he claimed the child was his and forced Vanessa to raise it. However, after a while, he became close with the child and started to adopt it. This episode was often criticized as being racist, especially when the character of Gianni Versace makes an appearance and he is described as an Italian.
