a group of researchers at Princeton University have been doing an interesting experiment with fruit flies. The experiment aims to figure out what happens when fruit flies are exposed to an environment with extremely high amounts of yeast.
What can be done if the number of fruit flies is too many?
The limiting number of fruit flies comes from the competition for space. When a new fly finds a space, its space may be taken by an older fly, which will have more babies. The number of fruit flies, therefore, is limited by the competition for space. This is a simplified view of the way fruit flies reproduce. Some fly species also take nectar, instead of space, to produce their babies.
What is the number of fruit flies that can be in a room?
The average amount of fruit flies that can be found in a room with a size of (33*3.5) cm is 473. The largest recorded number of fruit flies in one room was 30,000. Some other interesting numbers include, the average amount of fruit flies that can be found in one room that has a size of (33*8) cm is 33,667. The largest recorded amount of fruit flies in one room with a size of (33*8) cm is 83,000. This number goes up as the size of the room increases. The average amount of fruit flies that can be found in a room with a size of (33*17) cm is 45,000. The largest recorded amount of fruit flies in one room with a size of (33*17) cm is 60,000.
The limiting number of fruit flies
An interesting question I came across was how many fruit flies there would be in a can of fruit. The question was based on the question posed by Garrett Jones (a researcher at Duke University), “Can we count the number of grains of rice in the world?” His question is simply “Can we count the grains of rice?”. His question, in this case, was based on something known as the Central Limit Theorem. It is a type of mathematical theorem stating that the mean or average value of a large number of independent random variables follows a normal distribution. In other words, if you have a large number of independent measurements (that is, measurements that are not correlated), the results will tend to be close to normal (bell-shaped) distributions. So, the question posed is, can we count the grains of rice in the world?

How to count the fruit flies
[Table]: fruit flies are insects that measure from one to four mm. They are common in both temperate and tropical regions. They breed by mating in the soil and eggs hatch into larvae that then pupate into adults. These adults then fly off to find mates, lay eggs, and die. Although fruit flies are not a serious disease vector, they can carry diseases such as the malaria parasite.

In 1908, Thomas Hunt Morgan identified the first genetic mutation in fruit flies. This mutation was in the eye of the fruit fly and made the eyes light up. This is called a dominant eye mutation. Subsequently, other genetic mutations were found and named. Since then, the fruit fly has been an invaluable tool for scientists to study genetics and has also been used for many other experiments. The number of fruit flies that scientists use at any time depends on the amount of time they have. Typically, one day of a lab’s worth of experiments can easily feed 10,000 of these small flies.
