Fish is one of the most popular foods across the globe. It is both nutritious and delicious. However, many people do not know how to prepare fish safely. It is important to make sure that you eat only raw fish that has been properly cleaned and handled.
Properly cooked salmon
Eating raw or undercooked fish may cause food-borne illness.
The Importance of Eating Raw Salmon
There are some risks associated with eating raw fish such as listeriosis. This is a type of food poisoning that can affect the heart, brain, and the rest of your central nervous system. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, confusion, and slurred speech. The risk of listeriosis is higher when you eat raw fish than cooked.
What is safe to eat raw?
Salmon can be a good source of protein, as well as omega-3 fatty acids. However, not all fish are safe to eat raw. Certain types of fish such as swordfish and shark are dangerous and can be deadly. Some species of fish such as marlin are also dangerous to eat raw, as they contain high levels of mercury. This means that if you consume large amounts of mercury, you can suffer from symptoms such as depression and memory loss. Others, like haddock and cod, can contain high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) which may cause thyroid and endocrine problems. In addition, some fish may be contaminated with methylmercury, a type of mercury that is more toxic than inorganic mercury. This can cause a problem called Minamata disease, which can cause problems such as slow growth and impeded brain development in children.
The Benefits of Eating Raw Salmon
Eating raw salmon can actually be beneficial to your health. Raw salmon contains a number of beneficial nutrients. For one, salmon is loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential for promoting healthy skin, hair, and nails, as well as boosting the immune system. Omega-3 fatty acids can also reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It’s also high in vitamin D, which may help prevent cancer. The biggest concern about eating raw salmon is parasites and bacteria. But, if you follow a few simple rules, you shouldn’t have any problems. Wash your hands before and after handling raw fish, and be sure to buy from a reputable source. It’s also important to keep your raw fish as cool as possible. Another great way to enjoy salmon is to steam it.
How to Cook Salmon
Salmon is a relatively inexpensive fish, and therefore is a good protein source. Eating raw salmon can lead to food poisoning, so it’s important to cook it thoroughly. Cooking salmon is pretty simple. Start by washing the salmon. Rinse it, and dry it off with paper towels. Next, split the fish into fillets. Cut away any remaining bones, or cut the fillets into smaller pieces, if necessary. Put the fillets into a large pot of cold water. Cook them on high heat, turning once or twice. Be sure to take out the cooked fillets with a slotted spoon and place them on a serving dish. Serve them immediately or keep them warm in a 250 F oven until you’re ready to serve them.
