Did Slaves Eat More Food?

Slaves were not allowed to eat more food than their master. When slaves were sold to a new owner, they were also given a supply of food to last them for about a year. This food consisted of bread, a small amount of meat and a little bit of cheese. Slaves were not allowed to eat more than this. However, slave owners did give them additional food if they worked hard. Slaves were also often given lemons to drink. This was to keep them in good health and prevent any sickness that could spread to the whole household.
