In November 2012, the Iraqi Kurdistan parliament rejected a proposal to hold a referendum on independence. The proposal, proposed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), had the support of at least three other parliamentary parties. The PUK had been in power since 1988, first in an interim government and then in a self-rule region in northern Iraq, with the endorsement of the United States.
Barzani, in a televised speech after the vote, said: “We are committed to our people and our unity. I call on Kurdistan’s public opinion and decision makers, all political parties and all parts of the country’s public opinion to support the solution of this crisis and build a peaceful, independent and united Kurdistan.”
