Preparing and cooking a pork shoulder

For the pork shoulder, you’ll need to cut it into 4 large pieces. You’ll first need to cut it into two large pieces (one moreso than the other). Then, you’ll cut these two large pieces into two smaller pieces. Finally, you’ll cut these pieces into 2 large pieces (one moreso than the other). You can see in the picture above that I used a large knife to cut each of these pieces into about 3 sections. I then stacked the pieces and cut the bottom one into 3 more sections.

How to prep a pork shoulder

A pork shoulder is a hunk of meat that is usually found in the front shoulder area of a pig. It is made up of three major parts, the bottom blade, the upper blade, and the rib roast. The bottom blade is the part that meets the shoulder blade, while the upper blade is the top of the shoulder. The rib roast is the part that is covered by the rib cage. The shoulder is actually a large muscle, so it’s very dense. A 9 pound pork shoulder should take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours to be cooked properly. To prepare the shoulder, you will need to begin by making a brine and cooking the shoulder to about 80 degrees. The shoulder is then wrapped in butcher paper and placed into the fridge for at least 24 hours. For your next step, you’ll remove the shoulder from the fridge, then soak it for a few hours in a mixture of water, salt, and liquid smoke.

The following recipe for pork shoulder is for a 9-pound pork shoulder. Feel free to modify this recipe to fit your needs and to taste. This recipe will give you enough liquid to boil potatoes or rice or to use as a base for soups. The only question you have to ask yourself is how much you want to spend on a pork shoulder. The seasonings in this recipe are for a medium pork shoulder and are to taste. I use the Masterbuilt 4.5 QT with a 220V/8 amp service because I like the bigger capacity of this smoker.

What to do in advance

If you’re cooking a large pork shoulder in a dedicated electric smoker, you’ll want to prepare it in advance. The shoulder needs to rest for several hours before cooking. A dedicated electric smoker does not have a built-in rotisserie. But you can use an oven rack to rotate the roast. To do this, use a screwdriver to remove the oven racks in your oven. Then put the shoulder on the oven rack. Put the rack in the oven and cook the shoulder for about 2 hours at 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Then remove the oven rack and wrap the shoulder with foil. Put it back in the oven to finish cooking for another 2 hours. Make sure to cook it in the oven for at least 8 hours, but 12 hours is better.
