Like many other vegetables, we have been using onions for thousands of years. They are a staple in many cultures around the world. Even in ancient Egypt, where onions were used as an ingredient in cooking, there are still many recipes that call for onions.
How do you know when onions are bad?
Spoiled onion may start to sprout, indicating they’ve gone bad, or you might see brown spots developing. If you see any brown spot forming, you should stop using the onions immediately. This indicates that they need to be thrown out. Onion with white spots is starting off well, so don’t worry about it. But if there are any black spots forming (which means they aren’t going to stay), you need immediate action. Don’t use onions until you know what’s going on! The best way to prevent spoiled onions is to keep them refrigerated. When you open a bag of onions, make sure you remove all the air bubbles. Then place them in boiling water for 5 minutes. They should be ready when they float to top.
How long will onions last on counter?
You can store whole onions for up 6 weeks on top of a countertop, or up 2 months in refrigerator. But once you slice into the onion there‘s really no saving it any longer. I would recommend storing whole ones in freezer bags, which will keep them fresh for much longer than cutting into them. They are also easier to slice open and clean off the skin. You should also try to avoid storing onions in plastic containers, since they tend to break down quicker. Just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw onions.
Do onions last longer in the fridge or pantry?
